Applicants from the regulated allied health professions (Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech-Language Therapy) whose qualifications are not found on the List of Recognised Qualifications can take and pass the relevant Qualifying Examination (QE) to be eligible for Conditional Registration.

Purpose and Standards of the Qualifying Examinations

The QE is an assessment of the professional knowledge and skills expected of practitioners in Singapore.  The QE standards will reflect competencies for safe and current practice in Singapore.  Questions for the Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy QE will be drawn from Nanyang Polytechnic course curriculum and moderated to ensure relevance to all practice sectors.

Eligibility Criteria for the Qualifying Examinations

To be eligible for the QE, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

a) Possess a degree qualification in the relevant discipline of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy or Speech-Language Therapy.

i) The entry requirement for the professional course must be A Levels or equivalent.

b) Have an employment offer to practice in Singapore.

Candidates will only be allowed a maximum of two attempts to pass the QE.

Qualifying Examinations Schedule

The QE is administered by higher educational institutions in Singapore on behalf of the Council.  The following details the schedule of the upcoming QE:

Application for the Qualifying Examination

a) Allied Health Professionals currently practising in Singapore

For Allied Health Professionals who are on Restricted Registration and are keen to take the QE,

  1. They should apply directly to the relevant examination provider in Singapore for the QE which they intend to sit for.
  2. The completed QE application form together with the relevant fees and a certified true copy of the Restricted Registration Certificate must be submitted directly to the examination provider by the closing date for the relevant QE.
  3. Contact information and the postal address for the examination provider can be found below.
  4. The examination provider will inform them on the venue, date, time and other instructions on the QE.


b) For Allied Health Professionals with no prior practice experience in Singapore

For this group of Allied Health Professionals who are keen to sit for the QE,

  1. They must first apply for registration with the Council.
  2. Upon initial review, they will be informed of their eligibility to sit for the QE.
  3. With the confirmation letter from the Council, they must then apply directly to the relevant examination provider in Singapore for the QE which they intend to sit for.
  4. The completed QE application form together with the relevant fees and a certified true copy of the confirmation letter from the Council must be submitted by the employer directly to the examination provider by the closing date for the relevant QE.
  5. Contact information and the postal address for the examination provider can be found below.
  6. The examination provider will inform them on the venue, date, time and other instructions on the QE.
  7. Upon receipt of the QE results, they must inform the Council and submit a copy of their results.
  8. The Council will then continue with the review of their applications for registration.

 

Note:
For all such applications, the Council will hold the registration application up to a period of 1 year from the date of application to enable the applicant to fulfil the QE requirement.  After this deadline, the applicant will need to submit a fresh application for registration and make the necessary payment.
Examination Fees

Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy

The cost per candidate is SGD400 (including GST) for each sitting*.

a) For applicants with no prior practice experience in Singapore:

The application form together with the payment and a certified true copy of the confirmation letter from the Council to sit for the QE must be submitted by the employer to Nanyang Polytechnic 6 weeks before the QE.

b) For registrants on Restricted registration:

The application form together with the payment and a certified true copy of the Restricted Registration Certificate must be submitted by the employer/candidate to Nanyang Polytechnic 6 weeks before the QE.

The payment may be in the form of Singapore issued cheques or bank drafts in Singapore currency.  Payment for the QE is to be made payable to "Nanyang Polytechnic" and be sent to:

Speech-Language Therapy

The QE examination fee consists of two parts: the written fee ($642.00 including GST) and the oral examination fee ($214.00 including GST).

The acceptable modes of payment are cheque, bank draft or credit/debit card.  For payment via cheque/bank drafts, two separate cheques/bank drafts for both fees must be received before the application can be processed.  The oral examination fee will only be deducted after you have cleared the written examination.  Please make the cheques/bank drafts payable to the "National University of Singapore" and indicate your name on the back of the cheques/bank drafts.

b) A certified true copy of the Restricted registration certificate from the Council.

No refunds of the written/oral examination fee will be issued for withdrawals.  All refund requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and must be in writing to the SLT QE Examination Boards via email/letter by the date of the respective examination.

Examination Frequency

The Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy QE will be conducted 4 times a year in January, April, July and October.  The examinations will be held mostly on the 2nd Friday of the stated months but may be conducted over 2 days, Friday and Saturdays.  Candidates are expected to be present on both days.

The Speech-Language Therapy QE will be conducted 2 times a year in September and April, and will be conducted over 3 half days in total.

Examination Instructions to Candidates

Candidates sitting for the examination must be present at the stated venue at the stipulated time. 
Candidates will not be admitted into the examination venue 30 minutes after the commencement of the examination.  Candidates must bring along their passport and copy of the reply from the examination provider as proof of identity.

Examination Results

Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy

Results will be released 4 weeks after the QE.  For candidates with no prior practice experience in Singapore, the examination provider will issue results to the employer and Council.  For candidates on Restricted registration, the examination provider will issue results to the candidate and Council.

Speech-Language Therapy

Results for the written examinations will be released approximately after 2 weeks.  Candidates who are informed that they have successfully passed the written examinations will proceed to undertake the oral viva examination within the following 2 weeks.  For all candidates, the examination provider will issue the results to the candidates and the Council.

Candidates who fail the QE will be allowed to sit for a second (final) attempt.

The decision of the panel is final and appeals will not be entertained.

Please note that successful completion of the QE does not guarantee a positive outcome of the registration application with the Council.  Any false declaration/documentation submitted by the applicant to the Council may render the QE results void and invalid.
